Race report: VLN round 4 2012 Nurburgring

The team are competing in the mighty VLN championship, held exclusively at the notorious Nurburgring in Germany. They’re competing in the historic 3.0 litre class, cars built before 2002, in their BMW E36 M3, with this being the cars first outing at the ring.

The weekend saw a number of firsts. Drive Ben Salmon returned to the ring and racing after 6 years out of the seat, after a major operation. Kevin, legend car builder, Maxted saw a transition back to circuit racing and the first time at the ring since his 24hr race in 2001. And Nick the grandmaster Starkey, was reunited with his colleagues and back at the ring after 6 year break from the infamous ring and the second time not in Caterham!

Practice went well with a respectable time set, placing the team 3rd in class ready for the race.

AND IT’S GO, GO, GO! Starting in group 3 Kevin made a fantastic start gaining 3 places right front the start. Early carnage meant lots of yellow flags and the Renault Clio incident shown below, provided Kevin with another opportunity for an overtake, which was executed perfectly!

An hour in and the team built up a solid 3rd in class. On his 4th lap Kevin got hit by a Porsche which knocked him sideways, but he kept it on the track and 3 laps later he came in to hand over to the grandmaster Starkey.

Nick gained further progress throughout his stint and not only solidified the 3rd in class but also managed to gain a number of places to climb as high as 87th overall. Nick thought there could have been a wheel bearing issue but managed 7 laps before handing over to Salmon.

Salmon stormed out of the gates to deliver consistent, keep it clean, laps. After hearing a ‘hurry up’ message on the radio, he gained 40 seconds on his previously closing rival in just one lap!

The team crossed the line with a fuel strategy which was impeccably managed and with only 5 litres left in the tank! With two stops the team not only finished 3rd in class, but were also placed 82nd overall, having made up 49 places from the start!
